The Newport
Harbor Sailing Foundation, located in Newport Beach, CA, is dedicated to
providing financial support to local youth and amateur sailors who aspire to be
the best in the world. With your support, they provide funding that
allows sailors to compete in championship regattas in the United States and
around the world.
The Skipper
Dick Golf Tournament was selected by the NHSF as an annual fundraising
event. The golf tournaments have raised approximately $100,000 for the
Foundation.
Our Mission
Established
in 1997, the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation (NHSF) was created by a group of
local boaters who love sailing, understand its myriad rewards and strive to
make it more accessible to local sailors. NHSF provides training and
instruction to children and young adults, and supports only those competing on
an amateur basis. For individual sailors and for selected teams, monies
raised offset the costs of equipment and training, entry fees, travel and
lodging.
The NHSF
promotes worthy competition by providing ongoing support of grant recipients
who demonstrate consistent achievement and participation in regional, nationals
and international sailing events. The primary goal is to cultivate and
develop young talent so that they can participate in sailing challenges at a
high level.
Most NHSF
grant recipients have progressed from summer sailing to inter-scholastic
programs up and down the West Coast. Targeted events include
internationally recognized sailing events such as the Olympics, the
Pan-American Games and the Youth World Championships.
Since
inception, NHSF has provided significant funds to area high schools, which
recognize sailing as a varsity sport but supply no funding for it.
Beneficiaries include Newport Harbor High School and Corona del Mar High
School, which consistently rank among the nation's top 1o sailing teams.
NHSF provides similar support to Mater Dei in Santa Ana and Sage Hill School in
Newport Coast. NHSF grants also strengthen sailing programs at UC Irvine
and Chapman University.
NHSF has
thus helped support the sailing dreams of more than 1,000 local young people.
Many have further benefited by receiving priority admission to such colleges
and universities as Yale, Princeton, Stanford and Georgetown.
All have
been rewarded by the invaluable life lessons of rigorous sailing-teamwork,
self-discipline, problem solving, camaraderie and a global perspective.
